Commercial Cleaning Products
I think its important to know what we are using to disinfect our homes. Have you read the ingredients of most commercial disinfectant sprays sold at your local super markets? One of the most popular disinfectant spray in todays market, has the following ingredients.
Chemistry lesson
I really do not want to bore you with a chemistry lesson, but essentially that is what this is. This ingredients in most of the cleaning products sold at the supermarket today, are not natural or plant based.
Different disinfectant products contain different active ingredients. For instance, examples of active ingredients used in Lysol products:
- Ethanol/SD Alcohol, 40 1–3%; fluid that acts as sanitizer
- Isopropyl alcohol 1–2%; partly responsible for Lysol’s strong odor; acts as sanitizing agent and removes odor
- Chloro-o-benzyiphenol, 5–6%; antiseptic
- o-Phenylphenol 0.1%; antiseptic; in use circa 1980’s
- Potasium Hydroxide 3–4%
- Alkyl (50% C14, 40% C12, 10% C16 dimethylbenzyl ammonium saccharinate, 0.10%; microbiocide
- Alkyl C12-C18) dimethylbenzylammonium choloride, 0.08%; antiseptic
- Alkyl (C12-C16) dimethylbenzylammonium chloride, 0.02%; antiseptic
- Lactic Acid as an antiseptic
- Hydrogen Peroxide
What Does All This Mean?
Some of the above toxic ingredients, for instance o-Phenylphenol is used as an agricultural fungicide. Chloro-o-benzyiphenol contains amounts of ether and of course, dimethylbenzylammonium choloride is ammonia. These are only some of the ingredients found in the most commonly used disinfectants that we use daily in our homes.
My Essential Oil Journey
I was introduced to essential oils over 4 years ago at that time, I did research on all of the cleaning and personal products I had been using. Can I say I was stunned! This certainly explains my auto immune diseases that I have been diagnosed within the past years. It also explains the epidemic of illnesses and disease in our country. In saying this, is it our fault? Absolutely not, no one intentionally sets out to use products that are harmful to our health. In my opinion, its just a lack of information. We did the best we could under the circumstances of our modern and busy life styles.
A Natural disinfectant
All of my recipes are tried and used by me. I have the most amazing blend of essential oils that kill all, if not most of the bacteria on surfaces. It is not harmful to the skin, or harmful if you inhale it.
I created a wonderful blend of Lemon oil, Lavender oil, Rosemary Oil, Tea Tree oil for my disinfecting spray.
Lemon Oil
Lemon Oil is cold pressed from the rind. It takes 3000 lemons to produce 1 kilo of oil. Lemon oil has been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin, reduce winkles, and combat acne. Lemon peel was used as an antiseptic, diuretic, a vascular stimulant, protector, and as a vitaminic. In addition, lemon oil can also be used as a flavorant, and for cleaning, cooking and to treat scurvy, including a variety of other ailments. It is antitumoral, antiseptic, improves microcirculation, immune stimulant (may increase white blood cells), improves memory, relaxation, rich in limonene, which has been extensively studied in over 50 clinical studies for its ability to combat tumor growth.
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is antiseptic, antifungal, analgesic, antitumoral, anticonvulsant, vasodilating relaxant, anti-inflammatory, reduces blood fat/cholesterol, combats excess sebum on skin.
Rosemary Oil
Rosemary Oil is liver-protecting, anti inflammatory, anti tumoral, anti fungal, antibacterial, anti cancer, antidepressant, hypertension moderator, enhances mental clarity/concentration. Its uses, are for infectious disease, liver conditions/hepatitis, throat/lung infections, hair loss, acne, impaired memory/Alzheimer’s and weight loss. (Do not use under children under 4 years of age. Do not use for high blood pressure if already taking antihypertensive medications).
Tea Tree Oil
Did you know that Tea Tree oil is highly regarded as an antimicrobial and antiseptic essential oil? Its’ historical data suggest that it is highly regarded as an antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral, anti parasitic, anti inflammatory actions.
