Habits
Below is how to develop habits to live in a clutter-free home.
Habit #1
Clean on a daily basis, even if its for 30 minutes. When you clean make sure you are mindful that you have not added items that you do not need, use or want. If you have, then purge them.
Habit #2
Only buy what you need. This one can be difficult because most of us have tendencies of overbuying. If there is a sale at the food store of buy 3 and get 3 free and you want to stock up on these items, then make sure you have a place in your home to store these without creating clutter.
When I buy new clothing and before I hang those items in the closet, I go through my closet or dresser drawers and donate clothing that is outdated or I haven’t worn in a year. I also toss clothing that is worn or has paint on them. This is a great time to declutter. I also, do the same with shoes.
Habit #3
Plastic grocery bags seem to multiply by the hundreds until I switched to reusable bags. I store my reusable bags in a covered clear container in my garage. When I’m ready to grocery shop, I place the entire container in the car. Using plastic grocery bags can be convenient and easy to use. However, they create a lot of clutter, with only one trip to the store you can get as many as 20-30 plastic bags. Not only are they bad for the environment they are a huge factor in creating clutter. Reusable bags are wonderful and easier to use.
Habit #4
On a daily basis check your pantry for expired foods and spices. Doing this also allows you to know what you need for your next grocery trip and helps you with overbuying.
Below is a spice drawer. This keeps my spices organized and readily available right next to my stove. I also keep up with the expiration date, by putting the expiration on the bottom of the jars with my label maker.
My handy husband made this drawer following directions from Kelin at the www.hydrangeatreehouse.com
Habit #5
Do daily checks of your dishes, plates, cups, glasses, bowls, pots, pans for any chips and worn areas or just plain grunge that will not clean up. Dispose of these dishes and if there is a particular dish that you absolutely need, go out and buy it. A good time to decluttering your kitchen is when you are doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen.
These are 5 habits that can easily become a part of your life, only if you purposefully do these habits on a daily basis. Once these habits have become routine, you will be well on your way to maintaining and living a clutter-free life.
