One of the worst things that can happen
One of the worst things that can happen to your indoor pet is for him to get skunked. Skunks are no longer isolated to the country life. Skunks are in the suburbs of most cities. Due to the expansion of the building of homes, essentially where most skunks live. Therefore, making it very doable for your dog to get skunked.
Skunks Odor
A skunks odor will normally last 15-21 days if left untreated. Most dogs usually get sprayed in the face which could cause nausea or vomiting if swallowed and will act like tear gas if it gets in the eyes or mouth. If this happens, immediately rinse the dog’s eyes, nose, and mouth with cool, clean water as soon as possible after exposure and seek immediate veterinary treatment.
Also, check your pet for any scratches or bites from the skunk, clean them well and seek veterinary treatment.
Learned the Hard Way
I’ve learned the hard way on what to do when your dog gets sprayed by a skunk. I have tried so many products, things like bathing the dog in Dawn dishwashing liquid, or vinegar baths, hydrogen peroxide, scented dog shampoos, shaving the hair off the dog (although that helps some) but you run the risk of the dog unable to cool himself off, in the heat or keep warm in the winter until his fur grows back.
I had to show you this picture of my sweet girl, isn’t she just beautiful?
Absolutely none of the above worked. What I did find out to work was a blend of Young Living oils along with Animal Scents dog shampoo. This blend, all though you may have to repeat it, works better than anything else I’ve tried.

I hope that you never have to experience your pet sprayed by a skunk, but if you do, have this spray on hand and use it immediately. A dog’s olfactory system is 1000 to 10,000 times better than a human. It’s important to remove the smell off of them as quickly as possible, as the odor is much stronger to them than it is to us.
Another Useful Piece of Information
A dog contains another special olfactory system above the roof of its mouth called the vomeronasal organ, which helps dogs sense things that they cannot see, such as human emotions. A dog can tell if a person is sad or happy, and this also helps dogs know whether an animal is friendly or dangerous to them.
I hope you don’t ever have to go through the experience of your dog getting sprayed by a skunk, but if you do you will now be fully prepared to get rid of the odor.

Loved it. Duke was sprayed directly in the face. We bathed him several times with online remedies and then was blessed with this. It definitely worked great.

Thank you Michelle! Yes it does work, I’ve used it myself and others have used it too!

I’ve never had my dog sprayed by a skunk but he has gotten into fights or killed groundhogs. He sometimes also rolls around in poop he finds. Why? Why? Why?? That’s a terrible smell too. Thanks for the tips. Hope my dog never encounters a skunk! 🤞🏼

Oh yes Susan, that rolling around in wildlife poop is almost as bad. I’ve actually used this spray for foul odors on my dog and then bathing in the Animal Scents shampoo, too.

Susan, groundhogs are just as bad. I’ve never had that happen, but I really think this would work on that too! Rolling around in poop is bad too. I just have this spray made up and use it for things such as that.
