What is Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s day is usually considered a day for couples in love lavishing expensive dinners, dozens of roses and boxes of candy on each other. It is a day of love, friendship and kindness.
Schoolhouse Valentine
But life gets in the way. So, let’s rewind…..Remember when you were a child and would address dime store valentine cards to your friends and sweeties at school? You would write your favorite friend’s name on it or the name of a person that you were smitten with. You would take all your valentine cards to school and drop them into a beautifully decorated slotted box. The box would be decorated in white shiny paper and red or pink hearts. You would anxiously wait for the Valentine’s day party and the passing out of valentine cards, to see if you received a valentine card from your favorite friends. The excitement and anticipation for this day was what made this day so much fun.
Making it a Tradition
So, why not make this a tradition in your own home? Have your children decorate a valentine box and address their cards to their siblings and parents. They each will have to secretly write something they are grateful about the person to whom they are addressing the card to. The younger children can just draw a smiley face or put a sticker on the back of the card. Have the children write a card a day for two weeks prior to Valentine’s Day.
Have the children help you with the family dinner. After a the family dinner have the children open up the beautiful vanentine box and pass out the valentine cards and watch as their excitemnt grows with their anticipation!
Empty Nesters Can too…
When the children are grown and have left home you can continue this nostalgic tradition. If you are a newlywed wtihout children you can do this too.
You and your spouse will decorate a valentine box, to be truthful an old shoe box will work, but decorate it together. Go out and buy your school valentine cards, one box each. Make and decorate your box the first week of February so you can have 2 weeks of gratitude.
Date the envelope and write something special on the card. Do this as many times as you like in a day or just once a day. It can be as simple as just appreciating your spouse for making dinner, or for grocery shopping, or just grateful for each another. You can write down a funny memory. Be creative!
Gifts
You can also add a gift in the box. Give your spouse a gift certificate to the Spa for a facial or pedi. Who doesn’t love that? You can also buy a gift certificate to Amazon, my husband is a Kindle person and constantly buys and downloads books off of Amazon.
Valentine’s Day
On Valentine’s day fix a simple favorite meal and light some candles.
After the meal, open up the valentine box and share the cards with each other by reading them aloud.
This is a wonderful way of showing appreciation. It’s simple, fun, inexpensive and encourages appreciation of everything you have. In today’s time where life is fast paced and both spouses work either in the home or ouside the home, it can be easy to get caught up in life’s struggles and forget our blessings.
Making Valentine day special is not hard. you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a meal or a gift. You can keep it simple and it can be fun. Valentine’s day is where you can show each other and the entire family appreciation, gratitude and love.
